Barcelona soccer star Lionel Andres Messi has been named FIFA Men’s World Player of the Year for 2010, ESPN reports.

In his career, Lionel Messi scored better than any other European player in the top five leagues of 2010. He scored a whopping 42 goals in 36 La Liga games, finished on top at the Champions League of 2010 with 12 goals in 12 games and scored 60 goals in total this year for his club and country.

Rangers trade Michal Rozsival for Wojtek Wolski

After learning last night that Alex Frolov would miss the rest of the season due to a torn ACL, Glen Sather moved quickly to bolster the Rangers’ forward corps today, acquiring Wojtek Wolski from the Phoenix Coyotes for defenseman Michal Rozsival.

Wolski has six goals and 10 assists this season, but at the age of 24 and with playoff experience in both Colorado and Phoenix, he fits the bill for what the Rangers need in dealing with a rash of injuries that has seen Ryan Callahan, Erik Christensen and Frolov go down in the past month.

"I’d spoken to (Phoenix GM Don Maloney) about a month ago, but there wasn’t any way we could make a deal," Sather said. "When the injury happened yesterday, things became more urgent. I was surprised last year when Colorado traded him. Thing haven’t been going well as probably he expectd in Phoenix, and Donnie wasn’t as happy with him last year as they went to the playoffs. It happened fairly quickly today."

Rozsival, who missed the last two games with sore ribs, had been with the Rangers since the lockout, posting a plus-35 rating to lead the league in 2005-06. Constantly hounded by the Garden fans after signing a long-term extension, he battled through injuries this season before finishing his Rangers career with 42 goals in four-plus seasons. Ryan McDonagh, the 21-year-old rookie who played the past two games, seems to have earned a spot for now, as Sather said that Michael Del Zotto will remain with Connecticut of the AHL for now, though that "could change tomorrow."

"I think that the obvious reason (to be willing to trade Rozsival) is that we’ve got young defensemen progressing," Sather said.. "We’ve been happy with the youth, and when you get a player, and you move a guy that’s 33 years old with this year and next year on his contract, it gives us an opportunity to get younger and better and gives the kids a chance to play."

Wolski has scored 85 goals with 142 assists in his career, playing 356 games in the NHL. A first-round pick of the Avalanche in 2004, he debuted at the age of 19 in 2005 and had his best season last year, with a total of 23 goals and 42 assists during a campaign in which he was traded to Phoenix for the stretch run.

In the playoffs, the third trip of Wolski’s career after two with the Avalanche, he scored four goals with an assist in seven games. He has been a good contributor on the power play in his career, but did not have a power-play goal this season with Phoenix, where he found himself in Dave Tippett’s doghouse. At 6-3 and 215 pounds, Wolski immediately becomes one of the biggest Rangers, and a seemingly natural linemate for Marian Gaborik upon his arrival.

“We know this is a little risky,” Sather said. “But the opportunity to do something with a 24-year-old who’s been an obvious goal scorer with a pretty high talent level, it was just too good an opportunity to turn down.”

Wolski is expected to be available for the Rangers' game at the Garden tomorrow night against the Montreal Canadiens. Kris Newbury, called up from Connecticut last night, will remain on the roster for at least one game.

And the future beyond one game is up for question all over, as Sather returned to the O-word, opportunity, when asked if he was done dealing. This deal opened up cap room for the Rangers to make a big splash either soon or at the February 28 trade deadline.

Wolski is in the first season of a two-year, $7.6 million contract, meaning he carries a $3.8 million cap hit. He becomes a restricted free agent after the 2011-12 season. Rozsival’s contract, which carries a $5 million charge, runs through next season.

"It gives us an opportunity to do some things that may come up in the future," he said. "It was a situation that was easy for us to make for a lot of reasons."

According to figures from capgeek.com, the Rangers have room to add a player with a charge of up to $4.8 million right now, or $10.3 million if they wait until the trade deadline. The news that Rangers fans should be even happier with than the freeing of more cap room is that Sather sounds committed to sticking with the plan of going with youth, and not surrendering it for a quick fix.

Jared Lee Loughner Identified As Arizona Shooting Suspect

Arizona authorities have identified Jared Lee Loughner, 22, as the man who allegedly opened fire at a public event in Tucson, Arizona, striking U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in the head. They're also seeking a second, unnamed person of interest, citing reason to believe that the gunman did not act alone. According to Caitie Parker, who says she has known Loughner for years, he apparently met Giffords once in 2007, and described her as "stupid and unintelligent." Loughner, initially reported as a possible veteran, once attempted to enlist but was rejected, according to the U.S. military.

While few details about Loughner have been confirmed, some unsettling YouTube videos filmed just weeks ago have been attributed to him. One video consists of a mix between delusional rants and harrowing warnings. After explaining his opposition to what he calls “treasonous laws,” he goes on to write, “In conclusion, reading the second United States Constitution, I can’t trust the current government because of the ramifications: The government is implying mind control and brainwash on the people by controlling grammar.” He continues “No! I won’t pay debt with a currency that’s not backed by gold and silver! No! I won’t trust in God!”

In early October, Laughner allegedly posted an eerie video in which he, wearing a trash bag and a hoodie and a giant mask, sets an American flag on fire, with the song “Bodies” by Drowning Pool playing in the background.

Law enforcement officials have confirmed the gun that was used in the attack was bought legally. The shooter, allegedly Loughner, reportedly fired on Giffords from about four feet away, sending her to the hospital with critical wounds, injuring 18 people in total and killing six, including a child and a federal judge. The gun was purchased on November 30 at Sportman’s Warehouse, in Tucson, and was bought along with at least one additional handgun.

Pictures have also surfaced allegedly showing Loughner volunteering at a book festival, and from his MySpace profile. Loughner listed reading as his favorite interest, and identified a slew of classics as his favorite books, including The Republic, The Odyssey, The Communist Manifesto, and Mein Kampf.

Christina Taylor Greene was a 9 year old girl killed in the Tucson, AZ shooting today.

Nine-year-old Tuscon girl Christina Taylor Green was fatally shot after her neighbours invited her to go along to a political meeting.

Christina was one of six people killed when a man opened fire at US congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford's meeting in Tuscan, Arizona.

The Arizona Republic website reported that a neighbour asked if Christina along to the event because she thought she would enjoy it her uncle Greg Segalini said.

Christina had just been elected to the student council at her school. The event was an opportunity for constituents to meet Mrs Giffords and talk about any concerns they had related to the federal government.

"The next thing you know this happened. How do you prepare for something like this. My little niece got killed-took one on the chest and she is dead," Segalini said outside the girl's house.

Christina was involved in many activities, from ballet to baseball, Segalini said.

"She was real special and real sweet," Segalini said.

Christina, who was reportedly shot in the chest, had featured in a book Faces of Hope: Babies born on 9/11.

The gunman shot at least 18 people, including Mrs Giffords, who survived a single gunshot to the head and underwent surgery.

The other victims from the mass shooting have been identified and they include an aide to Mrs Giffords, a federal judge and a pastor.

The Giffords aide was identified as Gabe Zimmerman, her community outreach director and the 30-year-old was engaged to be married.

U.S. District Judge John Roll, the chief judge for the District of Arizona, was alos killed while attending Mrs Gifford's public appearance, U.S. Marshall David Gonzales told AP.

Roll was named to the U.S. District Court for Arizona by President George H.W. Bush in 1991. He became chief judge of the court in 2006. Roll, 63, previously served as a judge in the Arizona state courts and as an assistant U.S. attorney.

He had started his legal career as a bailiff in the Pima County Superior Court. He served an assistant city attorney in Tucson and worked as a criminal prosecutor in Pima County before joining the U.S. Attorney's office in 1980, where he specialised in prosecuting drug cases.

A native of Pennsylvania, he graduated from the University of Arizona in 1969 and received his law degree from the University of Virginia in 1972.

''We in the judiciary have suffered the terrible loss of one of our own,'' Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. said in a statement.

''Judge John Roll was a wise jurist who selflessly served Arizona and the nation with great distinction.''

The other three victims are Dorwin Stoddard, Dorthy Murray and Phyllis Scheck
